Prologue
That Dark and Stormy Night
Wind howled against the shutters of my house. I curled deep under the covers, ignoring the noise. Rain came down like bullets nearly coming through the wooden ceiling. POP! Another hole broke through. The raindrops slowly came through the roof. I uncovered my self and stood up from the safety of my warm bed; annoyed yet again by the little leaks in my roof. I slipped on a robe and crossed the room to the cupboard watching out for the other buckets scattered on the ground. I opened the cupboard door, hearing the familiar creek, sitting there was yet another bucket. I lugged it over by my bureau, knowing that was where the new leak was. I set the bucket right beneath the leak and went to check the other buckets to see if they were filled.
Once confirming that the others weren’t full, I ambled half asleep to the last bucket on my stop that sat on the desk.
After knowing that the bucket wasn’t full, I sat down and took in the contents of the desk, the only thing s left from my first home: my journal, a music box, a picture of my family when it was all well, and a simple jewelry box. Tears started to come to my eyes as I thought of the contents of the jewelry box and the small little ballerina that dance inside the music box. I picked the music box up and cranked the little key on the bottom. My lullaby slowly began to play and the ballerina danced around the miniscule stage. A smile slowly grew on my face. I sat the music box back and let it play.
Then I reached for the jewelry box. I opened it knowing that I had not seen the contents since the year my parents died. I opened the little top revealing five things: my mother and father’s wedding rings, my father’s pocket watch, my mother’s pearl necklace, which I use to admire it around my mother’s neck, and my mother’s other necklace, a bright silky green gem on a simple golden chain. I gazed at the necklace with the gem. It made me curious, for now I never knew why. I picked it up and slowly turned it in my hands. I unlatched the hook on the gold chain and latched it around my neck. I slipped off my robe, and went to my mirror above my bureau, and admired the necklace; with its silky green gem and golden chain; very simple, but yet very beautiful. The music box slowly ended. I gazed over at the desk and I sighed wiping the few tears that came to me.
My clock above the stove stuck midnight. Suddenly, I heard a crash. I gasped; the noise pulled me back to reality. No one would be out in this storm. I scrambled to the window facing the rest of Telëginieca. I unfastened the shutter, letting in the rain and wind. I couldn’t see the full moon in the sky that was there when I went to bed, but now it was covered by the dark thundercloud. I heard a commotion in the main part of town. I dragged the shutters shut and ran out of my house, trying to find out what had happened that would have woken up the whole town. I rushed out of the door; wind hit me with full force nearly knocking me over. I hurried down the hill. I looked back at the lighthouse and saw Johnny slowly moving from the light that came from his small bedroom.
I hurried over the bridge just seeing the gathering place of the town that was when I saw Cassandra. She was walking into the crashing ocean.
Something stood deep in the water as if it was calling Cassandra to the water; its bright, fiery, red eyes hypnotizing her. I yelled at her, but she didn’t move, but progressed closer to the thing. Johnny was just getting out of his lighthouse and started to run to the bridge.
People in the main town stirred more, a few of them starting to enter the main road. I yelled even louder, but Cassandra couldn’t hear me. I ran to her. She was knee deep in the water by now. I just reached the water. Waves kept pushing me back away from my friend. I yelled for her with all my strength, with one last attempt, but it was too late, she was gone.
I went to my knees and cried. I couldn’t lose my friend, Cassandra was like a sister and she was gone like my parents.
I felt two hands on my arms lifting me out of the water, pulling back to the island, but I fought them off. I dove into the water and started to swim out into the freezing cold ocean water. I wasn’t going to lose my friend.
